Study shows that surgical weight loss does not eliminate obstructive sleep apnea

Despite many people undergoing various types of weight loss surgery — many in hopes of getting rid of their xPAP device, where a CPAP, bi-level, auto-adjusting, or other type of positive airway pressure device — new research shows it may not be the remedy.

A in the August 15, 2008 issue of the shows that surgical weight loss results in an improvement of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), but most patients continue to have moderate to severe OSA one year after undergoing bariatric surgery. Results of this study suggest that it is the severity of the condition, rather than a patient’s pre-surgical weight, that determines if obstructive sleep apnea will be resolved.

Results show that bariatric surgery reduced body mass index (BMI) from an average of 51 to 32 in 24 adults with obstructive sleep apnea.

Overlap syndrome studies urgently needed to learn COPD-apnea dynamics

The overlap syndrome: chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and obstructive sleep apnea.

Two doctors, D. Hiestand and B. Phillips, working in the division of Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine at the , say that clinical trials focused on sleep apnea and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are "urgently needed."

The duo says COPD and sleep apnea form what’s called an overlap syndrome and that overlap defines the relationship between the two serious respiratory disorders.

News media has a long way to go to understand sleepiness

CNN’s Judy Fortin missed the point in her latest story on CNN.com about "fatigue." The basis of the story, which is also the headline, is that "Fatigue is more than just plain tired."

I hope Fortin didn’t have to find rocket scientists to help her come to that conclusion for the story. Even though the story touches on several good points, it leaves one lacking.

Medicare made bad choice in not allowing in-home sleep studies

Medicare recently made a determination that it will not cover in-home sleep studies in many parts of the county. That’s an inherently bad decision, yet one applauded by many professional organizations.

It’s a bad decision because there are, for one example, far too many in need to sleep studies and far too few sleep labs.
